~Artist Statement~
...the late Gary Kasparek once told me "...almost everyone gets to look at the world; photographers get to see it." He was a good man with a good eye and a knack for teaching.
I actually started my career in photography as a videographer/photojournalist; you would expect a photographer to enjoy the lack of restraints that videography has to offer with it's enhanced capabilities...however, I found that video stole the moment away from a seemingly perfect scene by allowing it to move, thus making it... normal... a picture dictation of the obvious. For example: a still picture of Michael Jordan at the peak of his jump, is always better than the video of the man returning to earth. However, videography/photojournalism was a great training ground for art photography; I learned to tell a story, to be patient for ‘THE shot’ rather than A shot; all of the variables in depth of field, light, and composition. Since my first day on the job, 14 years ago, I have never seen the world in the same manner... my mind & eye are constantly working whether I have a camera in hand or not.
My finished collection consists of various things I have found AS I saw them. I choose the desired gear and composition and take the shot. I set up the parameters and the picture is the result. I enjoy today’s modern equipment for all of its potential but find that skill is the unintended victim in modern day photography.
There are many types of photographers none better than the other. I consider myself a composition photographer. It is my desire to create art that causes people to stop and stare, to take in the scene. Behind every picture is a history which we may never know but there are always clues left behind either by erosion in the rocks, the various places a boat may have traveled or a random shoe in seaweed. My art makes my soul content; I hope it stirs something in you.
